About image

Janet Bell is a contemporary English painter based in East Sussex.  She has a background in Textile Design and is a self taught acrylic and mixed media artist. Having also studied colour therapy she is aware of the importance of colour in our lives.
Janets work have been exhibited in galleries and alternative health centres in  England.

It is my love of colour, textures and contrasts which inspire me and my work is ever evolving.

I am interested in the energy of colours and the emotions they can convey. I work freely and intuitively, being drawn to work with certain colours initially and as a painting progresses the palette expands. My love of pattern and texture also feature in my work with layers of acrylic paint being added and sometimes scraped back to reveal contrasts in shape and form. I think outside the box when it comes to applying paint, using brushes,  palette knives, my fingers and also other less traditional implements to obtain the textures and patterns I desire. My work is colour led, gestural and multi layered.

Since I was a teenager I have been interested in abstract art. Originally I worked as a textile designer completing my course in 1980 and becoming a member of the S.I.A.D. I did this for many years before moving on to painting artworks on Thai tissue, watercolour paper and Japanese papers. I have always enjoyed experimenting with different materials and paints, producing both paintings and cards. My change of direction began in 1990 when I decided to paint using acrylics on stretched canvases. I love the vibrancy of the paints and their versatility. Recently I have been using mixed media on both paper and canvas.
